Looking back, I can’t find a point in my life where art wasn’t present. It’s always been something I’ve made time for — often against the advice of others who encouraged me to focus on the things that “mattered” more: my studies, athletics, and future. What I could never quite understand was why something that brought me so much happiness shouldn’t matter just as much.
Throughout college, I found ways to integrate art into my everyday life while staying on top of classes and athletics. Most days looked like running from lecture to my apartment to start an art project, heading to the lab, then rushing back to my apartment to finish the piece, and finally sprinting to the field for practice. After graduating, I began incorporating my art into secondary logos for the company I worked at (which turned out to be a big hit) and continued finding new ways to bring creativity into the world around me (read about The Start of Lino Printing).
If I can leave you with one piece of advice, it’s this: if anyone tells you not to prioritize something that makes you happy, politely decline their advice. Find a way to prioritize it all — your work, your friends, your family, and your future. Doing this for myself has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences of my life.
